RBI Lifts Ban on Banks on usage of Aadhaar eKYC

The Reserve Bank of India has informed all the banks that they can now use Aadhaar KYC Verification if the customer gives consent. Later on, the Central Bank has listed Aadhaar as a valid document for identification of customer or for KYC. Banks now allowed to carry Aadhaar Authentication or Offline Verification of Customers who voluntarily give consent to the bank to use his or her Aadhaar Number for identification. These new RBI instructions are now followed across all banks for various purposes like onboarding new customers, the opening of a bank account, etc. Last Year the Supreme Court had prohibited the use of Aadhaar for KYC as a privacy concern. The Bombay High Court directed not to deny Food Benefits under Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) to Kids who are without Aadhaar. The Bombay High Court was hearing a public interest litigation which was filed by Maharashtra Rajya Anganwadi Karmachari Sangh, who is a union of anganwadi workers. According to the notice passed, the Integrated Child Development Scheme commissioner was instructed not to fill any vacant posts in Anganwadi across the state, merge anganwadis that cater to fewer children, and make mandatory the linking of Aadhaar for children who avail benefits from the scheme. The communication was issued pursuant to directions issued by the finance department. Busted - Fake Aadhaar Centers Operated by Fraudsters

An Aadhaar Enrolment team from the Nodal Office raided a cyber cafe in Manesar and in Sector 18 Gurugram, as they were using rubber plaques with thumb impressions of authorized persons to run fake enrollment centers. Previously the team has submitted the report on the two cafes to additional deputy commissioner Munish Sharma, who ordered legal action. The Cyber Cafe on Manesar-Khoh Road which was being managed and run by Vinod Kumar was raided on September 6. Vinod Kumar was using thumb impression and software of his Jajjhar-based relative, which is an authorized operator under District Information Technology Society (DITS). How has Aadhaar benefited the Common Man?

Or just ask your household help, driver, poor living in slums and villages as to how they are using Aadhaar to prove their identity to get jobs, open bank accounts, for rail travel, and to get various entitlements and Govt. benefits directly into their bank accounts without middlemen. Ask them and they will tell you how empowered they are by having Aadhaar.

Why are some agencies not accepting eAadhaar and insist on Original Aadhaar?

eAadhaar (downloaded Aadhaar) from UIDAI website is as legally valid as original Aadhaar issued by UIDAI. Both should be acceptable by all agencies. In fact downloaded eAadhaar/ mAadhaar has updated address etc. of the Aadhaar holders and therefore should be preferable. If anyone refuses to accept downloaded eAadhaar, the Aadhaar holder may lodge complaints with higher authorities of those departments/ agencies.

Do NRIs need Aadhaar for Mobile, PAN, Banking and other Services?

Aadhaar is only for residents of India. NRIs are not eligible to get Aadhaar. The respective service providers like banks and mobile companies have laid down NRI-specific exemptions. NRIs should simply tell the banks and other service providers such as credit card companies etc. that they are not required to provide Aadhaar Numbers by virtue of being non-resident Indians.

Do Mobile Company Store Biometrics Taken at the Time of SIM Verification, and can it be used for any other purpose later?

No this is absolutely false, no one including mobile companies can store or use your biometrics which was taken at the time of Aadhaar re-verification. The biometrics are encrypted as soon as Aadhaar holder places his finger on the fingerprint sensor and this encrypted data is sent to UIDAI for verification. Regulation 17(1)(a) of Aadhaar (Authentication) regulations 2016, strictly prohibits any requesting entity which includes mobile phone companies banks etc. from storing, sharing or publishing the fingerprints for any reason whatsoever and neither shall it retain any copy of such fingerprints. Any violation of this provision is a punishable offense under the Aadhaar Act 2016.
