UIDAI to Introduce Virtual ID (VID) for Aadhaar Number

Virtual ID will be a temporary ID which will hide your actual 12 digit Aadhaar Number. You can just generate 16 digit random virtual number that would be mapped to your 12 digit Aadhaar, and provide it where-ever it is asked. By this was you would be able to secure your 12 digit Aadhaar Number from misuse. UIDAI will offer to generate Virtual ID via UIDAI resident portal, mAadhaar App, or at Aadhaar Kendra. Generating VID would be optional, the Aadhaar holder can either generate VID or else they can use directly Aadhaar Number instead. Once you generate VID it will be automatically revoked once you generate new ones or after validity expires of VID. VID would be generated only by Aadhaar holder and no individual or agency on behalf of Aadhaar holder. UIDAI shall implement the VID service by 1st March 2018.

PAN could go invalid if not linked with Aadhaar Number

PAN Card (Permanent Account Number) could go invalid if it is not linked with Aadhaar Number by 31st December. This step has been taken by government because there are many PAN Cards which are obtained fraudulently and this can be easily checked by linking UID (Aadhaar Number). Currently PAN Card is mandatory for all taxpayers to file income tax return but other people like students, or people outside tax bracket still uses this PAN Card as proof of identity document.
