How to Update Date of Birth in Aadhaar Card (2026 Guide): Step-by-Step Process, Documents & New UIDAI Rules

Have you noticed that the Date of Birth (DoB) printed on your Aadhaar card is incorrect? Whether it's a typing mistake, an approximate birth date, or an old record that needs correction, UIDAI allows Aadhaar holders to update their Date of Birth by following specific rules.

However, the process is no longer as simple as it used to be.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced new Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that explain when your Date of Birth can be changed, which documents are accepted, and in which situations your request may be rejected. The latest SOP also places greater importance on Birth Certificates and introduces additional verification for certain cases.

In this guide, I'll explain everything in simple language so that you know exactly what to do before visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Can You Update Your Date of Birth in Aadhaar?

Yes.

UIDAI allows Aadhaar holders to update their Date of Birth if there is a genuine reason for doing so. However, you cannot change it whenever you want.

Since every person has only one correct Date of Birth, UIDAI expects the information in Aadhaar to match your official records. That's why every request is carefully verified before approval.

When Can You Update Date of Birth in Aadhaar?

Generally, UIDAI accepts Date of Birth correction requests in the following situations.

1. Your Date of Birth Was Recorded as Approximate

Many people enrolled for Aadhaar years ago without having proper birth documents.

For example, someone born in a village may have only known that they were born "around 1992." During enrolment, the operator might have entered only the year or an estimated date.

Now, if you have obtained an official Birth Certificate or another valid Proof of Date of Birth, you can request UIDAI to update your Aadhaar with the correct date.

2. The Aadhaar Operator Entered the Wrong Date

Typing mistakes happen.

Imagine your Birth Certificate shows:

15 March 1998

But your Aadhaar displays:

15 May 1998

In this case, the mistake was made during enrolment even though your submitted document was correct.

UIDAI allows such corrections after verifying the document that was submitted during enrolment. If the operator entered the wrong details, your Aadhaar can be corrected.

3. You Want to Correct an Earlier Mistake

Sometimes people submit incorrect documents during enrolment or while updating Aadhaar.

For example:

  • Wrong school certificate
  • Incorrect Birth Certificate
  • Incorrect declaration

UIDAI now allows such individuals to correct their Aadhaar using genuine documents.

However, additional verification, affidavits, and supporting documents may be required. In cases involving fake or fraudulent documents, Aadhaar may also be deactivated until the issue is resolved.

Before visiting the Aadhaar centre, take a few minutes to verify your documents.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is the Date of Birth on my Birth Certificate correct?
  • Does it match my school records?
  • Does it match my passport or other government documents?
  • Have I updated my Aadhaar Date of Birth before?

Checking these details beforehand can save you from unnecessary rejection.

Which Document Is Best for Updating Date of Birth?

According to UIDAI, the Birth Certificate is the strongest legal proof of Date of Birth.

If you have one, always use it.

In many situations, especially for children and repeat corrections, UIDAI specifically requires a Birth Certificate.

Adults may also use other valid Proof of Date of Birth documents accepted by UIDAI, depending on their situation.

Documents Required for Aadhaar Date of Birth Update

The required documents depend on your age.

If You Are Below 5 Years

A Birth Certificate is mandatory.

No other document is accepted.

If You Are Between 5 and 18 Years

Again, only a Birth Certificate is accepted.

UIDAI follows this rule because Birth Certificates issued today can usually be verified online.

If You Are 18 Years or Older

Adults can generally submit any valid Proof of Date of Birth document accepted by UIDAI.

However, the document required may depend on what you submitted during your earlier enrolment or previous update.

Step-by-Step Process to Update Date of Birth in Aadhaar

Updating your Date of Birth is not something you can usually do from home. In most cases, you need to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Follow these steps.

Carry your original Proof of Date of Birth document.

If applicable, also carry:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Corrected Birth Certificate
  • Supporting affidavit
  • Marriage Certificate (for women changing surname after marriage)

Always keep photocopies along with the originals.

Go to an authorised Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Aadhaar enrolment centre.

Inform the operator that you want to update your Date of Birth.

The operator will first verify your Aadhaar details.

The operator will scan your documents and upload them to the UIDAI system.

Make sure all documents are clear and readable.

If your case requires an affidavit, submit it along with the other documents.

Before the update request is submitted, carefully check:

  • Your name
  • Date of Birth
  • Gender
  • Mobile number

Many future corrections become necessary simply because applicants don't verify the details on the screen.

Take your time and read everything carefully.

Your fingerprints, iris scan, or photograph may be captured if required.

This helps UIDAI verify your identity before accepting the request.

The operator will collect the UIDAI-prescribed fee for updating demographic information.

Always ask for a receipt after making the payment.

After submitting the request, you'll receive an acknowledgement slip containing your Update Request Number (URN).

Keep this receipt safe.

You'll need it to track your request online.

Submitting the request does not mean your Date of Birth has been changed immediately.

UIDAI will review:

  • Your submitted documents
  • Previous enrolment records
  • Earlier Proof of Date of Birth (if available)
  • Supporting affidavit, if applicable

If everything matches, your request will be approved.

If there is any discrepancy, UIDAI may reject the request or ask for further verification.

What If Your Date of Birth Is Already Verified?

This is where many people get confused.

If your Aadhaar already contains a Verified Date of Birth, UIDAI will not normally allow another change.

However, exceptions exist.

For example, if your Birth Certificate itself has been legally corrected by the issuing authority, you may be allowed to update your Aadhaar again. In such cases, the corrected Birth Certificate should generally carry the same Birth Registration Number (BRN) and be issued by the same Registrar, along with an affidavit.

Can You Update Date of Birth More Than Once?

Repeated Date of Birth updates are not encouraged.

If you have already corrected your Date of Birth once after enrolment, any further request will be treated as an exceptional case.

You may have to provide additional documents, such as a Birth Certificate and an affidavit, before UIDAI considers the request.

Common Reasons Why UIDAI Rejects Date of Birth Update Requests

Many applications are rejected because applicants overlook important requirements.

Some common reasons include:

  • Submitting unclear or damaged documents.
  • Using documents that are not accepted as Proof of Date of Birth.
  • Providing inconsistent information across different documents.
  • Applying for repeated changes without valid supporting evidence.
  • Submitting a Birth Certificate that does not meet UIDAI's requirements.
  • Using fake or altered documents.

Before visiting the Aadhaar centre, double-check that every document is genuine and consistent with your other records.

Updating the Date of Birth in Aadhaar is straightforward when you have the correct documents and understand UIDAI's rules. If your Aadhaar contains an incorrect or approximate birth date, don't delay the correction. Accurate details help avoid problems while applying for passports, government schemes, banking services, and other identity verification processes.

Before visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, make sure your Birth Certificate or other supporting documents are correct, carry any required affidavits, and verify every detail before submitting your request. Following these steps will greatly improve the chances of your application being approved without unnecessary delays.
